I originally had a different post that I had planned for today, but to be completely honest, I haven’t written it. So instead, I wanted to give a mental health update and share with you how I’ve stepped up my mental health game.
I have been focusing heavily on improving my mental health over the last few months, and as a result, my blog has taken a backseat, unfortunately.
My blog has always been a great outlet for how I’m feeling. But more recently, it has become an added stress – working out what to write about, promoting, taking blog photos. Plus, my DA dropped, and my spam score went up. I had been working so hard at trying to improve my DA that this was a real blow. It went from 14 to 11 overnight. My spam score has always been around 1-3%; however, this also went up overnight – to 7%! I was pissed off! This definitely contributed to me not wanting to blog.
Why Am I Stepping Up My Mental Health Game Now?
For the last 7 years, my mental health has been extremely up and down. Recently, more down than up.
I got some really shit news last month that I am trying to process. This has taken up a lot of brain space. And another reason why I’ve decided to step up my mental health game.
I’m also so bloody tired of having poor mental health. It’s not fair on me, and it’s not fair on my family either.
If you read my Looking Back At May 2021 post, you’ll know that I have been taking some positive steps towards improving my mental health, such as no longer consuming alcohol and earlier nights, but I know I need to do more.
I also need to make sure that I stay consistent. When I’m in a good place with my mental health, I tend to stop doing the things that work for me, which is absolutely the worst thing you can do!
So, What Have I Been Doing?
I’ve already discussed all the amazing benefits of gardening, but it really has been having such an incredible impact on my mental health. There has been nothing more satisfying to me the last few weeks than pruning my rose bush, planting seeds, repotting flowers, ripping up weeds, watching my seedlings grow and checking to see if any tomatoes have started growing!
All the sunshine has been great for boosting my serotonin levels, and I’ve even got a bit of a tan!
Staying Away From Alcohol
This is a big one. I used to use alcohol as a way to almost ‘numb’ my brain. This is clearly a terrible thing to do. The first few nights of not drinking are always a bit difficult, but I’ve replaced it with a cup of herbal tea in the evenings, and I love it. I’m less groggy in the mornings, I’ve lost weight, and I’ve saved some money too! I won’t go into detail about how bad alcohol is for you because we’re all fully aware!
I used to be a bit scared of meditation. Being completely still and not having anything to distract my mind. Meditation does take some practice, but I’ve started to incorporate some new elements (which I’ll go into in a little bit), and it’s completely changed the game for me.
Guided meditations are always good, especially if you are a beginner, as they give you something to focus on. Recently, I have been enjoying ‘Singing Bowls’ during my meditations. They relax me soooooo much and I also listen to them whilst falling asleep.
To be perfectly honest, I have not been journaling every single day. But every couple of days, I will do a brain dump in my journal, and I find it really helps. I write whatever is in my brain (usually a load of rubbish), but it just helps clear my mind.
We have finally started working on our decluttering plan! I wrote a post back in January (!) to see if decluttering can improve mental health. I won’t go into all the details now, but doing this really has had a positive impact on my mental health.
The final way I have been upping my mental health game is with crystals. I’ve recently been looking into my spiritual side, and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying it. I know many people believe that crystals and spirituality are a load of old hokey pokey, which is absolutely fine! However, personally, they have really been helping me.
It is believed that healing crystals can help boost low mood and energy, help prevent negative energy, release blocked energy, align the chakras (energy points in the body), help during meditation, help alleviate anxiety and lots, lots more!
I currently have several crystals dotted around the house to help prevent negative energies, help boost low moods etc. I also have certain ones that I hold during meditation, or even just in the evenings if I’m feeling anxious.
There is so much that goes into crystals, and I also have a few other items that I’ve purchased to help with my spiritual journey, but I won’t talk about all that now. However, I do have a post due to go live soon on my spiritual items so make sure you keep an eye out for that!
And this is how I’ve been upping my mental health game. I currently feel like I’m in quite a good place. However, I know that I must keep working on it. I’m trying out different things to find out what works for me. It’s all trial and error, but I think I might be finding a balance that works for me.
