Mud And Bloom Subscription Box Review

As a family, we spend far too much time indoors. We’d rather be inside, building towers, drawing pictures, watching movies and reading books. And when we do go outside, I’m at a bit of a loss at what actually to do. We go for walks, Little J rides his bike, and he plays in the garden on his trampoline or slide. However, after that, I have no idea what to do. That is why I was so happy to discover the Mud and Bloom subscription box.

What is a Mud and Bloom subscription box?

It is a specially curated box that contains seasonal nature crafts and gardening activities sent out monthly. It is aimed at children aged 3 – 8. The boxes contain four seasonal growing and craft activities and come with complete and detailed instructions (thank goodness!) The box is delivered straight to your door, so you don’t even have to leave the house!

Nature news and games are included that aim to teach children about the seasons, plants, insects etc. and have been developed by qualified teachers!

So, not only will we be spending more time outside, but I’ll actually be teaching Little J something too! Win-win!

I eagerly signed Little J (let’s face it, me!) up to the box. Unfortunately, we had ordered it halfway through February, and they had sold out of that month’s box, so we had to wait until March!

What’s In The Box?

I was so excited when the box was posted through our letterbox in early March. I couldn’t wait to see what was in there!

In the March 2021 box, we received:

As you can see, you get a lot in the box. I couldn’t wait to get stuck in. There were so many activities. I didn’t know where to start!

Cherry Tomato Growing

We chose to start with Cherry tomato growing. It came with full and clear instructions on what to do and seemed like the easiest option for beginners!

The box came with almost everything you need:

  • Organic cherry tomato seeds
  • Organic peat-free compost pellets
  • Wooden lolly stick
  • Easy to follow how-to instructions

The only things that we had to supply ourselves were a bowl of warm water and some little pots.

We started by popping two compost pellets into some warm water and leaving them for 10 minutes to expand. After that, all you have to do is tear them open and pour the contents into your pots. I decided that it was probably best for me to do that to save the mess!

All we had to do next was drop some of the tomato seeds into the pot. This bit was a bit fiddly as the seeds were teeny tiny, and toddler hands can sometimes be a bit clumsy! We finally got some seeds onto the pots, popped in the lolly stick label (after Little J had written on it!) and left them on the windowsill to start growing.

The card came with full instructions on what to do when the seedlings start growing and the next steps. I just have to wait patiently now for them to grow!

Wildflower Seed Bombs

On a wooden table is a small bowl, a small square packet wrapped in red tissue paper, an A5 instruction sheet, a metal spoon, a small packet of wildflower seed and a small packet of powdered clay.

I was so excited to do this one! Wildflower seed bombs are small balls made of natural clay, compost and flower seeds. You then sow or throw them outside and wait for the poppies, cornflowers, marigolds, corn cockles and chamomile to bloom!

Again, everything was already included;

  • Natural, additive-free powered clay
  • Cornfield mixed wildflower seeds
  • Organic peat-free compost pellets
  • Easy to follow how-to instructions

All we needed to add was a spoon, two small bowls and some warm water.

I decided that it was probably best to wear old clothes for this one as we were using clay!

Once we (well, just me, Little J didn’t want to get his hands dirty!) moulded our seed bombs, we popped them into the airing cupboard to dry out for a few days before planting them outside. However, I did save one to keep indoors so that I could see the pretty flowers all day!

Nature Paintbrush Paintings

This is such a clever idea! I can’t believe I’ve not done this before. Everything we needed was included, apart from the nature parts, obviously!

  • Twine
  • Gouache paint
  • Large sheets of paper

All we had to do was collect some twigs, grass and flowers. Once we had everything we needed, I attached the leaves and grass to some sticks, and we were ready to paint!

Pressed Flower Cards and Bookmarks

So, I was going to make these for Mother’s Day as I thought ey would make beautiful cards for my mum and mother-in-law, but I didn’t pick the flowers in time, unfortunately.

Included was;

  • Glue
  • Bookmarks and cards
  • Ribbon made from recycled bottles

All we need is some flowers, some heavy books and scissors. With the bookmarks, I have a laminator, so I’ll be able to keep them nice and safe!

Conclusion

I have thoroughly enjoyed our first Mud And Bloom Subscription Box. It’s hard to say who enjoyed it more! As well as the activities I have detailed above, they also included a nature news sheet with interesting facts and what’s happening in March. There is a recipe for wild garlic and cheese scones where you get to forage the garlic for yourself. Lastly, there was a quiz and signs of Spring checklist. The best part is the Mud And Bloom Subscription Box is charged at £13.95 per month with free shipping within the UK.

The suggested age range for the box is between 3 and 8. However, at age two and a half, Little J was still able to join in and enjoy most of the activities.
