Whether I’m blogging, painting my nails or toenails, washing up, having a pamper, chilling out, or having a self-care evening, I like to have something on in the background. I rarely sit in silence. It could be music, a TV program or a movie. And it’s movies that I’m talking to you about today. Specifically, Chick Flicks!
It’s no secret I absolutely love a good chick flick. To be completely honest, I love a crap chick flick too! Sometimes, you don’t want to have to focus on anything too heavy or intellectual; you just want something to mong out to.
Also, when you have a girl’s night in (soon, I hope!), you want something on in the background that you can dip in and out of without too much confusion. And that’s exactly where this list comes in.
What Makes A Good Chick Flick?
To be honest, I think it comes down to personal preference. For me, it needs to have comedy, be a bit cheesy, not too serious, have an easy to follow storyline and sometimes have a bit of romance thrown in there too! I want trash watching, basically! If you’re looking for smart movies that make you think, you’ve come to the wrong post!
So, get your popcorn/drinks/snacks because here is my list of terrible, trashy but awesome, easy watching, mostly funny chick flicks that you HAVE to watch at least once!

1. Bridesmaids
I think that this is the ultimate chick flick! It has super strong female leads (Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne), and it isn’t afraid of being completely silly.
The movie centres around Annie, whose life has gone downhill slightly. We find out that her baking business closed, she got dumped, she has no money, and she’s sleeping with a guy who is a massive dick to her. Her best friend Lillian gets engaged and asks Annie to be her maid of honour. Unfortunately, for both Annie and Lillian, things do not go to plan whilst doing all the Maid of honour duties. Annie also has the added drama of feeling like she’s being replaced by Lillian’s new friend Helen. This movie will give you real laugh out loud moments, especially the bathroom scene in the Bridal Shop!
2. Mean Girls
It doesn’t matter how many times I have watched Mean Girls; I will always want to watch Mean Girls. For anyone who hasn’t seen Mean Girls (have you been living under a rock??), it stars Lindsay Lohan (Cady) and Rachel McAdams (Regina). Cady was homeschooled due to living in Africa with her Mom and Dad because of her mom’s job. They move back to America, and Cady starts at a new school. She makes friends with Janis and Damian. Janis convinces Cady to become friends with Regina and the popular girls so that she can report back to her with all the horrible stuff that they say and try to overthrow Regina. There is a lot more stuff that happens, but you have to watch it because it’s awesome!
3. Bride Wars
When I was planning my wedding, I became OBSESSED with anything wedding related. I still love this movie, even if I don’t watch it quite as much anymore!
Two women (Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson) who have been friends since they were little girls, both get engaged to their respective partners. They both want a June wedding at The Plaza, both use the same wedding planner, and they’re each other’s Maid of Honour. There are three dates available at The Plaza – two on the same day and one a few weeks later. They pick separate dates, but you can guess what happens!
4. The Devil Wears Prada
I adore Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly in this movie. She is perfect, and I both love her and find her completely terrifying in this role!
The film follows a woman called Andy (Anne Hathaway) who wants to be a reporter. She gets a job at Runway magazine as an assistant to the editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly. Runway is a fashion magazine, and Andy is anything but fashionable. We watch as she tries her hardest to impress an impossible boss and how she changes to fit in with this new world.
5. 13 Going On 30
This is about a girl called Jenna on her 13th birthday. She invites the popular girls to her birthday party, but they ditch her! Jenna makes a wish to be 30, and thanks to some magic wishing powder, her wish comes true! Jennifer Garner does a great job of pretending to be a 13-year-old girl in the body of a 30-year-old. I remember watching this movie when I hadn’t even turned 20 yet, and I still love it now as a 30 something-year-old!
6. How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days
Andie (Kate Hudson) is a writer for a women’s magazine called Composure. She is the “How to” girl and is tasked with writing a piece called ‘How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days’ (funnily enough) as a ‘what not to do’ in dating. She goes on a night out with her friends to find her victim and bumps into Ben (Matthew McConaughey.) Andie decides that he will be the man she drives away in 10 days. However, she is unaware that he has just made a bet with his manager that he can make any woman fall in love with him in – you guessed it – 10 days. If Ben wins the bet, he will win a big account at his advertising agency.
It is so much fun watching Andie put Ben through the wringer and seeing what he puts up with!
7. Legally Blonde
Reese Witherspoon decides to go to law school to try and win back the love of her life Warner Huntington III after he dumped her. Because apparently, it’s that easy to get into law school.
Did you know that Warner Huntington III is actually Alaric from The Vampire Diaries?! I’ve also heard that they are planning on making a 3rd movie!
8. 10 Things I Hate About You
Oh, Heath Ledger.
I have lost count of the number of times I have watched this movie. It is a modern take on William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew.
Now, bear with me whilst I try and explain this movie.
There are two sisters, one popular (Bianca, the younger one) and one not so popular (Kat, the older sister). Both are still at school. Their dad has a rule that neither of them is allowed to date until they finish school.
A new boy (Cameron) joins their school and falls in love with Bianca. The popular boy (Joey) would also like to date her. Kat has no desire to date anyone. After an argument, dad decides that Bianca can date when Kat does.
SO…..Cameron decides to enlist the help of Joey and suggests that Joey pays someone to date Kat so that Bianca can date. Enter Heath Ledger.
It sounds confusing, but it is a brilliant movie, and you even get to hear Heath Ledger sing.
9. Wild Child
A spoilt American brat is sent to boarding school in England by her dad and goes on a journey of self-discovery.
Although I love this movie, I feel like Emma Roberts didn’t actually need to act for this role. I feel like she probably is the same in real life. Maybe that’s just me being mean?
10. Bridget Jones’s Diary
Well… it’s the diary… of a woman… called Bridget Jones.
11. A Cinderella Story
Sam (Hilary Duff) is an unpopular girl who lives with her stepmom and two evil stepsisters. Her dad died and didn’t leave a will, so she works in the family diner and tries to save all the money she can so that she can go to her dream school – Princeton. Sam has been chatting online with a guy, both sharing their dreams for the future. Neither has any idea who the other really is and so decide to meet up at the school’s Halloween dance. Sam dresses up in a beautiful wedding gown and masquerades mask.
When she gets to the dance, she realises that she has been chatting with the most popular boy at school, Austin. She refuses to remove her mask, but they dance and talk and have a lovely evening until Sam has to leave and go back to work at the diner before her evil stepmom (played by the hilarious Jennifer Coolidge) finds out that Sam left work. Austin still has no idea who this girl is (because a simple eye mask completely hides your identity 🙄)
On her way out, Sam drops her mobile phone and Austin must try and find out who his mystery girl is.
12. Miss Congeniality
The amazing Sandra Bullock plays a tough Special Agent for the FBI, Gracie Hart. She is passionate about her job and doesn’t care for hair/makeup/beauty products in general.
Unfortunately for her, she is the only one that is suitable to go undercover at the Miss United States beauty pageant to try and catch a domestic terrorist known as “The Citizen”.
Bullock plays the part perfectly and provides lots of laughs balanced with some serious parts (but not too many!)
13. Sex And The City
I’m actually watching this as I write this post!
Carrie and Big are getting married! They start by planning a small wedding, and Carrie picks a non-designer wedding dress suit (which seems out of character, to be honest?)
However, after doing a wedding photoshoot, Carrie falls in love with a dress designed by Vivienne Westwood. And because she has a big dress, the wedding gets bigger and bigger.
Big seems unhappy with the direction that the wedding plans are going in and, on the big day, decides that he just can’t go through with it.
14. Pretty Woman
The love story of a prostitute and a businessman. A tale as old as time.
If you haven’t seen it yet…Big mistake…Big…Huge!
15. Bad Moms
Another film with super-strong female leads – Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, and Christina Applegate. Three moms decide that they no longer want to play by the rules of motherhood and want to do things their own way. But will they be able to?
16. Sweet Home Alabama
I actually had my hair cut just like Reese Witherspoon in this movie when I was 16!
Melanie (Reese Witherspoon) is a successful New York fashion designer. She is in a relationship with Andrew (Patrick Dempsey). He proposes, and she accepts! However, there is one small detail that she forgot to mention to him – she is already married.
So, she takes a trip back to her southern roots to try and get a divorce from her estranged husband, Jake, who has refused to sign the divorce papers. Will he sign them now?
17. Charlie’s Angels
I’m referring to the 2000 version featuring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu. It’s a bit silly and has unrealistic stunts, but it features strong women being awesome, so that’s why it’s on the list!
18. What’s Your Number?
One that you probably haven’t actually already heard of. This movie is actually adapted from a book. The book was much better, but the movie was pretty good too!
Ally (Anna Faris) is a woman in her 30s who wants to make better life decisions. She asks her boyfriend to go to her sister’s wedding with her, and rather than accepting; he breaks up with her. She then also loses her job!
Whilst on the way home, she reads an article in a magazine that states that women who have more than twenty lovers in their lifetime have difficulty finding a husband. She writes a list and discovers she’s had 19 lovers and decides not to have sex again until she finds the one.
Unfortunately, at her sister’s bachelorette party, she bumps into her old boss, and one thing leads to another, and he becomes number 20.
Rather than increase her number any further, she decides to track down all of her exes to see if any of those may have been ‘The One.’
Chris Evans also stars in the movie, so it’s definitely worth watching.
19. The Princess Diaries
Mia is an unpopular girl still at school. She has braces, glasses and big bushy hair. She lives with her mom as her parents split when she was still a baby. Unfortunately, her dad recently passed away.
Then, one day her paternal Grandmother says that she would like to meet her. Mia agrees and goes to tea with her and finds out that she’s actually a princess!
I still daydream about finding out that I’m really a Princess. But you know, not one that actually has to do stuff and make big decisions. I want the castle, fancy gowns and people fawning over me 🤣
20. Girls Trip
This will give you lots of actual Laugh Out Loud moments!
Four lifelong friends who call themselves the Flossy Posse reunite for a weekend of fun. However, with big personalities and old, unresolved arguments, will the weekend be as fun as they hoped?
Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish, and Jada Pinkett Smith star in this movie, and it honestly gave me lots of Laugh Out Loud moments!
Conclusion
And there are my Best Chick Flicks For A Girly Night In! I have picked movies that I think are easy to watch but still make you laugh. What do you think of the ones I’ve selected? Do you agree with my 20, or do you think there are some that I have missed? Let me know in the comments!
